How it works - Equipment Purchase/Rental

In general, Internet Service Providers require the customer to either purchase or rent equipment; generally a cable or DSL modem, or radio transceiver. This obviously adds additional cost to the customer. This practice places responsibility for that equipment on the customer. If the device is defective or goes bad it is the customer's responsibility to replace it.  Additionally if the manufacturer of the equipment in question releases any software or firmware updates, it is the customer's responsibility to obtain and apply them. "Obviously this can cost you additional hassle, time, and money."
